The New Pamban Bridge in Tamil Nadu is the country's first vertical-lift sea bridge and was inaugurated on Sunday by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the occasion of Ram Navami. The Coast Guard ship that was flagged off by the Prime Minister passed under the bridge on its way to the new Rameswaram-Tambaram (Chennai) train. After his three-day tour of Sri Lanka, he landed in Tamil Nadu and performed puja in the Ramanathaswamy temple in Rameswaram and laid the foundation stone for several rail and road projects worth over Rs 8,300 crore in the state.
About The Bridge
The bridge is 2.07 kilometers long across the Palk Strait in Tamil Nadu and showcases India's engineering ability and foresight in infrastructure development, the Ministry of Railways stated. The bridge is located in Ramanathapuram District, linking Rameswaram Island to the mainland at Mandapam. Built at a cost of more than Rs 700 crore by Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL), a Navratna PSU under the Ministry of Railways bridge has a navigational span of 72.5 meters, which can be lifted vertically by 17 meters, allowing for safe passage of vessels underneath.
Key Features and Functionality
Though it operates over a single line presently, the bridge can also support two railway tracks. This enables trains speeding at 80 kmph to pass over it. Increased rail traffic and heavy loading were also kept in mind in its design. As per a government release, the new bridge would last for 100 years.
In terms of construction, it has been designed with special engineering techniques to minimize maintenance requirements, uses stainless steel reinforcement and fully welded joints, high-grade protective paint, and a polysiloxane coating against corrosion from the harsh marine environment.
Due to its technology and modern style, the Pamban bridge is now being compared with famous bridges like the Golden Gate Bridge in the USA, the Tower Bridge in the UK, and the Oresund Bridge between Denmark and Sweden. The Old Pamban bridge was built in 1914 by British engineers with a manually operated Scherzer's span (a type of rolling lift bridge), whereas safety concerns prompted the passing over to be closed for rail traffic.
PM Modi witnesses Ram Setu
PM witnessed the Ram Setu while returning from Sri Lanka and shared an aerial video. "On the way back from Sri Lanka a short while ago, was blessed to have a Darshan of the Ram Setu. And, as a divine coincidence, it happened at the same time as the Surya Tilak was taking place in Ayodhya. Blessed to have the Darshan of both. Prabhu Shri Ram is a uniting force for all of us. May His blessings always remain upon us," he wrote in a post on X.
Ram Setu, generally regarded as the Adams Bridge, is a chain of shoals linking India and Sri Lanka. An expanse of 48 kilometers across the Rameswaram Island, just off the southeastern coast of India, connects with the Mannar Island in Sri Lanka. The bridge divides the Gulf of Mannar south, an inlet of the Indian Ocean, from the waters of Palk Strait flowing north, an inlet of the Bay of Bengal.
Looking Ahead
The new Pamban Bridge shows how India is moving forward with modern infrastructure. While the area has a rich history, the new bridge focuses on being strong, smart, and better for the environment. As India works to connect its transport systems more smoothly, this bridge could inspire more projects that combine railways and sea routes.
But its true success won't just come from great engineering. It will depend on how well it helps local people, respects the area’s history, and protects the natural surroundings.
