While we have thought about reusing the old lehenga, many are not sure how to do it. Don’t worry we’ve got you. Being a fashion enthusiast, with the expertise of a couple of my designer friends, I have put together seven different ways to style your lehenga skirt, so you could reuse them and make it look new.
How Do You Reuse a Lehenga Skirt?
The moment we hear the term lehenga, we think of weddings. But lehengas are way more beautiful to be restricted to weddings alone.
The history of lehengas goes way back to the Mughal Empire, which holds a rich tradition. Though it is a traditional outfit, it can be combined with modern and classic clothes for a contemporary look.
Maybe wearing it with the choli may give off a wedding vibe. But you can reuse your lehenga skirt and pair it with different tops according to the occasion for a more subtle look.
The Mix and Match Styles To Reuse Your Lehenga Skirt
Why follow only traditional styling when you can mix and match your clothing? Fashion is one way to express yourself, and mixing and matching is a great way to showcase your unique personality.
There are no hard and fast rules in styling. You can read more about dressing according to your body type here (#google_vignette" target="_blank" class="external" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">how to find your body type). You can choose to mix and match different prints for a print-on-print look; different fabrics for a textured look; colors, of course, for a peppy look; etc.
Reuse Old Lehenga With the Layering Style
This technique comes in handy, when we plan to reuse our lehenga skirts. Plus, layering is a very sustainable way, as you can use one shrug or jacket to style different outfits.
With shrugs, jackets, and coats available in various materials, layering should not be reserved for winters alone. A light shrug or a jacket will be very comfortable to wear and elevate your outfit’s look.
1. Kurta for the BFF’s Engagement
For this, another Indian girl staple “the kurta” comes into play. Your everyday kurta can be a game-changer with the beautiful lehenga skirt.
Select a long, fitted kurta of a contrasting color. You can choose a solid kurta or a kurta with a subtle print. Accessorize it with a pair of danglers, a precious or semi-precious stoned necklace, and an elegant watch.

For footwear, you may choose metallic pumps, peep-toes, or sandals. Add a cute minaudiere like the Oscar de Laranta confetti sequin embroidered one and you are ready to rock.
2. Blazer for a Colleague’s Wedding
Blazers never go out of fashion, and they can make a great pair for your existing lehenga skirt. When you have a gorgeous blazer, why limit wearing it to work? The blazer with the lehenga skirt is an alluring combination.

An embroidered or embellished blazer will add to the ethnic look. Enhance the look with a polki statement necklace, minimal earrings, and a matching sneaker.
Add shine to your look with metallic eyeshadows like this Chanel Ombre Essential eyeshadow. A potli bag like the Nani Potli bag by Sabyasachi could add a traditional touch to the look.
3. Denim Jacket for Your Sister’s Sangeet
If you are a fan of layering, then this look is for you. Simply wear the denim jacket over your lehenga choli or a crop top for an Indo-Western look.

The denim jacket is a very comfortable piece of clothing, which means you can wear it all through the year. Nowadays, these jackets come in different shades of grey, blue, black, white, and pink, so don’t restrict yourself to just the blue ones.
A bright contrast-colored clutch or mini bag could be added for a burst of color. You may also match your lip color with your handbag if possible.
4. Crochet Top for a Haldi Function
The Disco era’s handmade, artisanal crochet tops are back in fashion, and why not pair them with the lehenga skirt?
For an eye-catching look, you could choose a simple, bright sleeveless one like this green crochet top from Mango and a yellow lehenga skirt.

For accessories, you may choose a simple earring, ring, and watch of the same color as the top for a balanced look. An embellished bag could add luster to the look.
5. Corset for a Sangeet
The corset is not an undergarment anymore. Unlike their traditional counterparts, modern corsets are more comfortable and enhance the natural body structure.
A neutral corset could be a perfect pair for your existing lehenga skirt of any color. This tradition meets high-end fashion look can be rounded up with contemporary jewelry like the tourmaline earring, necklace, and ring set from Sabyasachi Mukherjee.

You may also add two or more statement bangles of your choice for a balanced look.
6. A long shrug for Karwa Chauth
A long, flowy shrug could match your structured lehenga well. You could choose from various options, like printed or solid; sleeved or sleeveless; crepe or cotton; etc.
In terms of accessories, you could choose an oversized dangler and a simple Kada bracelet. For makeup, you may go with bold eyes and subtle lips.

You could choose a handbag that matches the color of your shrug, like this poppy bag from Oscar de la Renta.
7. Cape for a Diwali Party
A sheer or solid cape could be paired with your lehenga choli for a chic look. Capes come in different varieties, like beaded, embroided, etc.; you may choose to wear them over your choli or a crop top of your choice.
A belt like the Sabyasachi pride belt could be a good addition to your overall look. In terms of accessories, you could choose a statement earring, a maang tikka (forehead pendant), and a simple watch.

For footwear, a pair of jutties (traditional Indian footwear) would make the look more traditional. With all this said, these are not the only ways you can reuse your lehenga skirt.Don’t hesitate to experiment with different tops, especially the ones from your wardrobe.
Also, with the increasing craze for fast fashion, repurposing is the need of the hour. Styling lehengas in not-so-traditional ways to reuse them is so much fun. Enjoy doing that with your family or your girl gang, and do write to us about your experience.
