February 17, 2025, New Delhi and Patna

In the early hours of Monday, a 4.0 magnitude earthquake jolted Delhi, followed by a 7.1 magnitude quake near the Tibet-Nepal border that sent tremors across Bihar. While no casualties or significant damage have been reported, these events have reignited discussions on seismic safety in the region.

The first quake struck Delhi at approximately 5:30 AM, causing buildings to sway and prompting residents to evacuate their homes. The National Center for Seismology (NCS) pinpointed the epicenter near the Delhi-Haryana border. Despite the moderate magnitude, the tremors were widely felt due to the shallow depth of the quake.

Shortly after, at 6:35 AM, a more powerful 7.1 magnitude earthquake occurred near the Tibet-Nepal border, approximately 93 kilometers northeast of Lobuche. This quake's impact extended into Bihar, with tremors felt in Patna and several northern districts. Residents reported shaking furniture and swaying ceiling fans, leading many to seek safety outdoors. Fortunately, there have been no reports of casualties or structural damage in the state.

In response to the tremors, railway operations in Bihar experienced brief disruptions. Trains in Kishanganj district, closer to the quake's epicenter, were temporarily halted as a precautionary measure. Services resumed after safety inspections confirmed the integrity of the tracks.

Bihar's Disaster Management Department has issued helpline numbers—0612-2294204, 2294205, and 7070290170—for residents seeking assistance or information related to the earthquake. The department emphasized the importance of preparedness, reminding citizens to remain vigilant and to follow safety protocols during seismic events.

Historically, the northern regions of India, including Delhi and Bihar, are susceptible to seismic activity due to their proximity to tectonic plate boundaries. The catastrophic 1934 Nepal–India earthquake, with an estimated magnitude of 8.0, resulted in significant loss of life and property, particularly in Bihar. This historical context underscores the necessity for continuous assessment and reinforcement of infrastructure to withstand potential quakes.

While Monday's earthquakes did not result in severe damage, they serve as a stark reminder of the region's vulnerability to natural disasters. Authorities are urging residents to educate themselves about earthquake safety measures, such as securing heavy furniture, identifying safe spots within homes, and having emergency kits readily available.

In light of these events, urban planners and policymakers may need to revisit building codes and emergency response strategies to enhance resilience against future seismic activities. Public awareness campaigns and regular disaster preparedness drills could play pivotal roles in mitigating the impact of such natural calamities.
