Chennai, Tamil Nadu. In a symbolic demonstration, members of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) students' wing conducted a blindfold protest in Chennai on February 18, 2025. The protest aimed to criticize the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) government's perceived negligence in addressing the state's deteriorating law and order situation.

Blindfold Protest

Gathering near Anna University, scores of students donned blindfolds to signify the government's alleged "blindness" to escalating crimes, particularly those against women and children. The demonstrators held placards demanding immediate action and stricter enforcement of laws to ensure public safety.

AIADMK's national spokesperson, Kovai Sathyan, highlighted the increasing frequency of sexual offenses within the state's educational institutions. He stated, "The alarming rise in such incidents reflects the government's inefficiency and misplaced priorities."

Recent Incidents Fueling the Protest

The protest was partly sparked by a recent sexual assault case at Anna University, which has drawn significant public attention. In response to the incident, AIADMK Students' Wing Secretary, Singai Ramachandran, along with other members, attempted to distribute black armbands to students as a form of protest. However, they were detained by the police for organizing a demonstration without prior permission.

This event is not isolated. Over the past months, there has been a series of protests led by AIADMK's various wings, including the women's wing, which has been vocal about the rise in crimes against women. These protests underscore a growing concern over public safety and the government's approach to law enforcement.

Government's Response

In response to the protests, Tamil Nadu's Law Minister, S. Reghupathy, dismissed the demonstrations as political theatrics. He referenced past incidents during the AIADMK's tenure, such as the Pollachi sexual assault case, suggesting that the opposition's current protests are attempts to regain political relevance. Reghupathy emphasized that the current administration has taken swift action in addressing such incidents and has no intention of shielding any perpetrators.

The blindfold protest by the AIADMK students' wing serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing concerns regarding law and order in Tamil Nadu. As both the opposition and the ruling party continue to engage in a war of words, the citizens await concrete actions that will ensure their safety and uphold justice in the state.
