Sunita Williams has returned to Earth, but her glee knows no bounds. After spending nine months on the International Space Station, she at last came back to her dear abode.
Sunita, whose ancestral village is in Gujarat’s Mehsana district, was born on September 19, 1965, in Ohio, United States. She also holds the record for the longest time in spacewalks by a female astronaut. One might now wonder about her academic journey. Which school did she study at?
Her Qualification
As revealed on the official NASA website, Sunita completed her studies at Needham High School, Massachusetts, in 1983. Then, Sunita completed her bachelor's degree in Physical Science from the US Naval Academy in 1987 and a Master's in Engineering Management from Florida Institute of Technology in 1995.
Sunita Williams: Before The Road to NASA
Sunita Williams was commissioned as an Ensign in the U.S. Navy after she graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in May 1987. Later on, she obtained her accreditation as a Basic Diving Officer and reported to the Naval Aviation Training Command after a temporary six-month assignment to the Naval Coastal System Command.
In July 1989, Sunita was designated a Naval Aviator and reported to Helicopter Combat Support Squadron 3 for initial H46, Seaknight, training.
In September of 1992, she became the OIC of an H-46 detachment sent to Miami, Florida, for Hurricane Andrew Relief Operations onboard USS Sylvania. She was selected for the United States Naval Test Pilot School in January 1993.
Immediately after graduating from the course in December 1993, Sunita Williams became the H-46 Project Officer at the Rotary Wing Aircraft Test Directorate and was in the capacity of V-22 Chase Pilot in T-2. NASA states that she was also assigned as a squadron Safety Officer and performed test flights on SH-60B/F, UH-1, AH-1W, SH-2, VH-3, H-46, CH-53, and H-57. In December 1995, she returned to Naval Test Pilot School as an Instructor in the Rotary Wing Department as well as in another capacity as the Safety Officer of the school.
The NASA experience
Sunita was selected by NASA as an astronaut in June 1998. Her training was equipped with tours and briefings, many scientific and technical briefings very thorough training on shuttle and International Space Station systems, training in physiology, and ground school for T-38 flight training, plus survival techniques in water and wilderness.
On completion of this training, she joined the Russian Space Agency in Moscow to work on Russian Contribution to the space station and the first Expedition Crew. She was part of the NEEMO2 crew, living underwater for nine days in the Aquarius habitat. After her first flight, she served briefly as the Deputy Chief of the Astronaut Office.
She subsequently served as Flight Engineer for Expedition 32 and ISS Commander for Expedition 33 during long-duration missions. Sunita Williams took off on June 5, 2024, in Boeing's Starliner for its first crewed flight and arrived at the space station on June 6.
They were originally slated for a one-week return, but the return was delayed due to some issues with the Boeing Starliner capsule, subsequently extending their Starliner mission.
An Announcement...
With the announcement of NASA for an uncrewed return of Starliner, Sunita became an Expedition 71/72 crew member and returned to Earth on March 18, 2025, aboard a SpaceX Dragon spacecraft along with fellow NASA astronauts Butch Wilmore and Nick Hague, as well as Roscosmos cosmonaut Aleksandr Gorbunov-all members of NASA's SpaceX Crew-9 mission.
