Former Punjab Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal has again been elected as the president of Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD). About 500 honored delegates of the Akali Dal elected by the party members during its organizational elections unanimously elected Sukhbir Badal as the party chief on Saturday. Badal had resigned from the post four months ago. He was first elected as party president in 2008 and is 68 years of age.

Finally, while addressing a press conference organized here on a new development in the SAD's electoral campaign, Gulzar Singh Ranike, election officer of SAD, announced the name of Badal as Sah president at a session held at the Teja Singh Samundari hall in the Sri Darbar Sahib complex in Amritsar.

Sukhbir Singh Badal expressed his Appreciation

Sukhbir Singh Badal indicated after being elected as president of Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) that, "I thank all the Punjabis, Khalsa Panth and all the members of the SAD who gave me an opportunity to serve. I promise to the people of Punjab that we will make Punjab no.1 again... Our Gurus have taught us to respect all religions... I want to assure people of all religions that Punjab is your state..."

"Congratulations to Punjab’s development man, Sukhbir Singh Badal, on becoming the president of Shiromani Akali Dal. May Sukhbir Singh Badal firmly guard the rights of the Panth and Punjab and make Punjab prosperous again", reads a post on X by Shiromani Akali Dal.

Badal's re-election comes barely four months after his resignation following his being declared 'tankhaiya' (guilty of religious misconduct) by the Akal Takht for 'mistakes' committed by the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) and its government between 2007 and 2017.

The Working President Nominated Badal

His name was recommended by the party working president, Balwinder Singh Bhundar, while party leaders, Paramjit Singh Sarna and Mahesh Inder Singh Grewal, supported this name. The session was attended by several senior party leaders, including Badal's wife and Bathinda MP Harsimrat Kaur Badal, former minister Bikram Singh Majithia, and Daljit Singh Cheema.

Badal Officially Stepped Down in January 2025

Subsequently, Badal resigned as SAD president last December, which was accepted by the party's Working Committee only in January this year. Giani Raghbir Singh, Jathedar of Akal Takht, announced his declaration of Badal as 'tankhaiya' on August 30 for the "mistakes "committed by SAD and its government from 2007 to 2017.
