The latest image generator for OpenAI ChatGPT has sparked many memes online, prominently featuring artwork inspired by Studio Ghibli, the famous Japanese animation studio responsible for many classics such as My Neighbor Totoro and Princess Mononoke. The new edition of ChatGPT allows users to turn popular internet memes or their pictures into the style of Hayao Miyazaki, founder of Studio Ghibli, a noted critic of AI who has spoken out strongly against it in the past.
Social media is filled with Ghibli-style images as users create AI-generated versions of their family members, friends, and the like. Following suit, brands used it as a tool for promotional content. The new feature brings with it a lot of user-generated content, with many sharing their creations across social media. I haven't tried it yet, but a friend of mine did.

The images made by viral AI have included a Studio Ghibli-inspired version of Elon Musk with President Donald Trump, a scene from The Lord of the Rings, and even the recreation of the September 11 attacks.
Joining the trend is OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, with an image on his X profile where he converted himself into a Ghibli character. On X, he wrote: ">be me >grind for a decade trying to help make superintelligence to cure cancer or whatever >mostly no one cares for first 7.5 years, then for 2.5 years everyone hates you for everything >wake up one day to hundreds of messages: ‘look i made you into a twink ghibli style haha.’”
"No one hates you except your competitors bro. You're one of the most loved man in the world" a user commented. Another user commented," NGL, I thought OpenAI was done with image generation—DALL·E 3 hadn’t seen an update in ages. Then one fine day, GPT-4o shows up with insane image capabilities. Well played, Sam!
AI-generated art is becoming more popular. Tools like DALL·E and Midjourney let people create art without needing special skills. Supporters say these tools make art easier for everyone to create and share. But not everyone is happy about it. Critics worry that AI could harm professional artists by copying their styles without paying them. If companies can create art quickly and cheaply, how will real artists earn a living?
Others believe that AI art is missing something important—human emotion. Studio Ghibli’s films are loved because they show deep feelings and care in every scene. Can a machine ever create art with the same heart and soul?

The rapid rise of AI in creative fields poses deeper questions about ownership, authenticity, and the future of art itself. If legal action follows, it could set new precedents for how AI-generated content is regulated. For now, Ghiblification remains a viral sensation—but its long-term impact on the creative industry is still unfolding.
