There is a Reddit thread that advises against using your Google account to log in to any random platform or service. This thread, which has more than 130 comments, explains how using a Google account to sign in to a service exposes your personal information to data collection by online marketing agencies and advertisers, who then use or sell the data as part of their business operations.
Data Privacy Fears
A user claims that by automatically filling out forms with their name, email address, contact information, and other personal information, using a Google account streamlines the sign-up process. If the information is accurate, though, it will be shared with more than just the service you are attempting to access. Several platforms that provide Google plug-ins for log-ins have privacy policies that allow for the retention, storage, and even use of your data for targeted ads. My friend Rahul said,
"Everyone should sign out from Google as our data has no privacy, and we are giving permission to go through our data. It should stop as soon as possible".
If you unintentionally provide permissions when logging in with Google, third-party websites may be able to access your data. Google is a greater worry, though, as it can use your login credentials to monitor your online activity and create a comprehensive profile of your preferences and habits.
Should You Avoid Logging in with Google?
In the same discussion, one user brought up the fact that the data is anonymized because Google's login process is based on OpenID Connect, which establishes the parameters for what information is shared with third parties. Although they may request additional permissions from users during the login process, third parties do not, by default, have access to all data categories. My Elder sister said,
" I have disabled my Google Chrome. My data has been juggling all over the internet, which I don't want to happen.
Yes, Google logins summarize the information that will be shared with third parties in a step that also requests your consent to proceed. You can't, however, exclude every data category because most services list information like phone number, email address, and name as "necessary" for logging in.
Security Risks
You will probably be logged out of all the services you have used your Google account to access if it is compromised or you lose access to it. Furthermore, data on these services that is connected to your Google account could potentially be compromised. Attacks and breaches may also occur on websites that you visit with a Google login.
The Bigger Picture
The Reddit thread highlights strategies for preventing the disclosure of private information to outside parties. You could, for example, use a burner Google account with little or no personal information.
For greater control over data, you can also experiment with unique logins by setting up distinct accounts for each website with different passwords. Additionally, you can use password managers to generate and save new login credentials for every website.
