WOMEN - these five letters stand like a pillar to every individual in society. They hustle for their family and themselves. They take care of everyone. Most importantly, the world is nothing without WOMEN. So, this Women's Day, let me share the story of a woman who bustles in the lanes of Kolkata, where tradition often dictates roles, one woman has been challenging norms for over three decades. Sonali Mistry, affectionately known as "Mechanic Didi," stands as the city's sole female two-wheeler mechanic, a sole example of determination.
At 52, Sonali is truly inspiring. She was 18, at the time when women's roles were tightly defined by society as confining them within the domestic sphere. She dived into the world of wrenches and axle tools and learned the art and craft of it along with her husband Shankar. The establishment of 'Abdul Kalam Auto Capital' on Prince Anwar Shah Road, opposite Bangur Hospital, became the outlet for both their passions. At this establishment, Sonali has been seen busy repairing two-wheelers, hence that endearing title from the local people, "Mechanic Didi".
Her journey was full of challenges. Facing societal criticism and financial hardships, Sonali's commitment never wavered. In the early days, balancing household chores with the demands of the workshop was taxing, but her hard-work paid off. Today, she manages the garage and mentors five mechanics, imparting her knowledge and breaking gender stereotypes.
Sonali's aspirations extend beyond her garage. She envisions establishing a training institute to nurture young talents, especially girls interested in mechanics. This dream underscores her commitment to empowering the next generation, ensuring they have opportunities she had to fight for.
Her story is a cradle of hope, challenging the gender stereotypes. Whereas there exist professions that are often gendered in society, Sonali's success begs a rethink of such rationale. Her journey rather underscores that gender does not determine ability, it is passion and commitment that matter.
However, Sonali's story also touches upon the importance of community support. Despite initial resistance, the acceptance and admiration she now receives from her clientele and community signify a positive shift in societal attitudes. This transformation is crucial for others who might wish to tread unconventional paths.
Sonali Mistry's journey from a young woman defying norms to becoming Kolkata's cherished "Mechanic Didi" is a powerful reminder of what determination can achieve if we have the capability and belief within ourselves. Her story not only inspires but also challenges us to create an environment where passion knows no gender, and dreams are not limited by societal expectations. I would like to share a quote with my readers as I also got inspired by her story. So here we go!
"It’s not about being perfect. It’s not about where you get yourself in the end. There’s power in allowing yourself to be known and heard, in owning your unique story, in using your authentic voice." — Michelle Obama.
