Gen Z, or Generation Z, born roughly between 1997 and 2012, is a generation that has seen the transformation from an analogue to a digital sphere where we are interconnected virtually yet distant physically. From experiencing the world wide web to getting caught up in the web of individualism, this generation uses technology not to work but to relax.

Gen Zs can live in two worlds at the same moment: one is the virtual world as Instagram, Facebook, and Snapchat always surround them, and the other is the real world.

With the oldest members of this generation now in their late 20s and early 30s, they’re no longer the new kids on the block. They’ve become a force, redefining almost every aspect of life. For them, achieving peace of mind is more important than participating in the corporate rat race.

Prioritizing learning and development

Pulkit Trivedi, Managing Director, India, Snap Inc. said:

India is a young nation with a 377 million Gen Z population, which will shape the future of India's growth in the next two decades. Gen Z will be the biggest contributor to India's consumption growth, driving $ 1.8 trillion worth of direct spending by the year 2035.

The digital natives are reshaping the map of India's corporate culture by transforming the employer-employee relationship. A report by India Today reveals that 67% of Gen Z individuals consider professional growth more important than salary.

Being a Gen Z from the 2000s myself, I believe either you should learn at your workplace and grow or else you should leave it because money is an important factor but so is your process of learning and developing.

Emphasis on Work-Life Balance and Flexibility

According to a report by Business Standard, 47% of Gen Z individuals prioritize work-life balance when assessing job opportunities. They prefer workplaces that offer flexible work arrangements, allowing them to manage their professional and personal lives effectively. This preference for flexibility is also highlighted by The Economic Times, which states that 64% of Gen Z in India seek organizations with flexible work options.

Creating a boundary between your personal life and professional life is healthy for your well-being as well. When the lines get blurred, it becomes difficult for an individual to navigate their life.

Valuing Mental Health

A study by RPG Group found that 64% of Gen Z individuals prefer flexible work options, and 61% would accept a lower salary to work for organizations that prioritize mental health and inclusivity. This generation values workplaces that offer effective harassment policies and mental health resources and foster a culture of openness and support.

The broader definition for us is not always a hike in salary but also a healthy and supportive work environment that is safe for everyone. Because after our homes, individuals spend most of their time in their work places.

We are not climbing the corporate ladder in stiff suits and rushed meetings; we are trying to rewrite the entire rulebook by being more empathetic towards each other. We are not each other's competitors, we are each other's collaborators. We advocate for organizations to provide resources like counseling services and to cultivate cultures that prioritize well-being. We believe that by aligning these values, companies can cultivate a more engaged, satisfied, and productive workforce, ensuring mutual growth and fulfillment in the evolving professional landscape. India’s future is in capable hands, and I am proud to witness and contribute to their journey.
