India is making significant strides in bolstering its defence sector. The Ministry of Defence recently signed five major contracts worth ₹39,125 crore to enhance self-reliance and modernize the military.

Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL): A ₹5,249.72 crore contract for RD-33 aero engines for MiG-29 fighter jets. This move aims to sustain the operational capability of the Air Force's MiG-29 fleet.


Larsen & Toubro Limited (L&T): Two contracts totaling over ₹13,000 crore for close-in weapon systems and high-power radars. These projects will involve active participation from Indian industries, including MSMEs, generating significant employment opportunities.

BrahMos Aerospace Private Limited (BAPL): Two contracts worth approximately ₹20,500 crore for BrahMos missiles and ship-borne BrahMos systems for the Indian Navy. These systems offer long-range, high-precision strike capabilities.

Russia's Offer of Su-57 Stealth Fighter Jets

Russia has offered to produce its advanced Su-57 stealth fighter jets in India. This proposal aims to deepen defence ties between the two nations and enhance India's air combat capabilities. The Su-57, a fifth-generation fighter, is designed for air superiority and precision strikes. The offer includes full technology transfer, allowing India to produce the aircraft domestically. This collaboration is seen as a strategic response to regional security dynamics, particularly concerning China's military advancements.

UK-India Defence Collaboration

UK and India have expanded their defence collaboration by agreeing to jointly develop next-generation weapons systems. This partnership involves Thales and Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL) and aims to enhance India's self-reliance in defence manufacturing. The collaboration includes the supply of Laser Beam Riding Man Portable Air Defence Systems (LBRM), with initial deliveries scheduled for later this year

India's Defence Procurement Plans

India is also in discussions with the United States to procure and co-produce combat vehicles and finalize a fighter jet engine deal. These negotiations are part of India's broader strategy to diversify its defence partnerships and enhance its military capabilities. The potential agreements include the acquisition of Stryker combat vehicles and co-production of General Electric fighter jet engines in India.

Furthermore, the Aero India 2025 show in Bengaluru showcased India's focus on boosting defence manufacturing and exports. The event featured over 150 foreign companies and representatives from 30 countries, highlighting India's role in global defence collaborations.

These developments underscore India's commitment to strengthening its defence sector through both domestic initiatives and international partnerships.
