Love can be the most beautiful thing if you have found the right person in your life to grow old with for eternity. A few days ago, a story went viral on social media about an elderly couple who ran away 64 years ago and recently got married again. This enduring tale of love has left the internet in tears. Mrudula, 86, and Harshad, 89, first tied the knot in 1961 without familial approval, but this time, they were surrounded by their extended family, including grandchildren and great-grandchildren who travelled from the USA to participate in the family occasion.
A Love Story Against the Odds
Their journey began in the narrow lanes of Dhana Suthar ni Pol in Ahmedabad, where teenage love blossomed despite societal barriers. Communicating through secret signals and exchanged letters, their bond grew stronger, and both fell head over heels for each other. However, Mrudula’s Brahmin family opposed her union with Harshad, who belonged to a Jain family.
Reflecting on those times, Harshad, a practicing lawyer even in his late 80s, shared:
I have always believed that when you select a man for your daughter, you don’t see their caste but the boy, his education, family background, and potential. I still do not understand what Mrudula’s family did not see in me back then.
A Dream Fulfilled Decades Later
It was their nephew, Darshan Jani, and his wife, Stuti, who revived the dream of a lavish wedding. They decided to include all of the customary rituals, including mehendi, grah-shanti, haldi, phera, and vidai, after learning about the couple's low-key first wedding. As a sign of the bride's parents' approval and blessing, Darshan played the kanya-dan, a function customarily assigned to them.
Mrudulaben remarked:
My nephew performed the ritual role of my parents, and what can be a bigger blessing than this! I was dancing and singing through two days of celebrations, and when I held my husband’s hand in the chori on Saturday, I was living my dream. I couldn’t ask for more.
It is deeply inspiring to know about Mrudula and Harshad's experience. In an era when giving up on relationships is so swift, their devotion is hope-giving and a reminder of the long-term strength of love. It's a story of resilience, enduring love, and the eternal path of two spirits who dared to defy the odds to be together. Their journey will certainly encourage many to have faith in the long-lasting power of love and the happiness that lies in respecting it. It also reflects the changing dynamics of family relationships, with younger members having a key role in paying tribute and celebrating the heritage of their predecessors.
