Gender-Neutral Styles Redefining Male Fashion

Even though women have been free to wear men’s clothing items like trousers and blazers and suits for decades, men haven’t had the same luxury – at least not without being laughed at (remember that episode of Friends – the one where Rachel gave Joey a man-bag and then everyone made fun of him even though he was comfortable wearing it?).

gucci-gendr-neutralGen-Z is challenging traditional gender norms, with androgynous fashion becoming increasingly prominent among male celebrities, designers, and K-pop idols, regardless of their sexual orientation. Icons, even the non-Gen-Zers, like Harry Styles, Brad Pitt, and Ezra Miller have embraced feminine fashion on the red carpets and in magazine shoots, like makeup, skirts, dresses, and even corsets.

And innovative ad campaigns by famous brands like Nike, Gucci, Louis Vuitton, and Jimmy Choo are paving the way for a more gender-fluid and boundary-pushing approach to fashion.

Yes – let me clarify before we start – femininity is still beautiful and will always be. It’s cool to be girly and will always be. However, the definition of feminine fashion is evolving. Back 10 years ago, women’s luxury fashion used to appeal to the high-maintenance girl with trends including delicate fabrics and matching accessories, delicate surface work, etc.

Luxury fashion is now shedding its conventional girly image and embracing a more “cool” and approachable vibe, with boxy t-shirts, baggy pants, and sneakers becoming common among high fashion brand catalogs. Legacy brands like Dior and Chanel are transitioning from high-maintenance looks to chic and experimental designs, making luxury fashion accessible to a wider audience.

Social media influencers already began setting the tone for fashion trends among millennials. However, Gen-Z grew up learning styling from them, and turn to influencers for all their advice on shopping and styling. With short video format on TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube, discussions on the latest trends and beauty skills become accessible to everyone in real-time.

This means that there are fewer “brand names” to remember in fashion media, even though there are so many more media outlets and influencer personal brands nowadays.

The Evolution of Pop Girl Fashion

The contrast between Billie Eilish’s distinct style and the millennial pop divas like Taylor Swift and Katy Perry exemplifies the evolution of pop fashion. While millennial pop stars embraced a traditional Hollywood beauty and a more Victoria’s Secret model-esque feminine style, newer pop icons (even the millennial ones) like Billie Eilish and Grimes are breaking away from the cookie-cutter mold and embracing individuality and authenticity, blurring the lines between what’s traditionally beautiful and what’s stylish.

Millennials started this trend, and Gen-Zers are making this commonplace and expected. Everyone is championing inclusivity in the fashion industry, urging traditional brands like Victoria’s Secret and Barbie to embrace diverse body types and backgrounds. Magazine editorials, runways, and ad campaigns now showcase models of all colors, shapes, and sizes, reflecting a more representative and inclusive fashion landscape.

And we’re even seeing more inclusivity in the fashion industry, such as magazine editorials and runways. It’s way more common to see a model of color, curvy model, or short or disabled models than it used to be 15 years ago.

barbie-inclusivityAnd in ad campaigns and online shopping images, models of all colors, shapes, and sizes are expected now – earlier it used to be a very specific look. Although the fashion industry is trying, sometimes we still see more like inclusivity for the sake of it, and obviously, consumers can see through that fakeness!

Fashion Week’s Gender Fluidity

Fashion weeks are witnessing a radical change as gender boundaries blur both on the runway and in clothing designs. It’s now hard to tell the gender of many models and the intended gender of clothing, as there are more often styles for mixed genders than not, especially in men’s fashion shows.

While millennials have been demanding more sustainable and eco-friendly fashion practices, Gen-Z is leading the charge in selecting them too. With a deep concern for the environment, this generation is pushing brands to adopt ethical sourcing, responsible manufacturing, and eco-conscious designs, making sustainability a core aspect of the fashion landscape.

Rejection of Fast Fashion

Speaking of which, Gen-Z is increasingly rejecting the fast fashion culture and opting for quality over quantity. This is evident from a lot of things – but I will talk about two factors here. First of all, have you all seen what big phenomenons capsule wardrobes and quiet luxury are? Gen-Zers are investing in timeless and durable pieces, favoring slow fashion brands that prioritize ethical practices and longevity.

Personal Style in the Digital Age

For millennials and the generations before, personal style was something you had to create for yourself – a mishmash of all things you liked. It was, well, personal. For Gen-Z, personal style is characterized by, albeit ever-growing, a list of aesthetics that are ready to consume and easy to choose, almost like selecting a dish from a menu card.

Now you select your style, just like you select a movie to watch on Netflix, or a song to listen to on Spotify. Social media plays a significant role in shaping fashion choices now, as newer styles are born on social media first, and then fashion designers translate them into luxury fashion fused with their own tastes.

We see influences from TV shows like the post-apocalyptic aesthetic of Dune and Westworld, or movies like Barbiecore from Barbie movie. And then there are social-media-originated aesthetics like plazacore and coastal grandma – and each one comes with hairstyles and accessories to match.

In short, whether you love it or hate it, Gen-Z’s impact on the fashion industry is undeniable.

Their influence on the fashion landscape is multifaceted, resonating in sustainability, self-expression, inclusivity, and a rejection of fast fashion. By challenging traditional norms and embracing individuality, this generation is shaping a fashion world that is more authentic, diverse, and socially conscious.

As fashion continues to evolve, blurring the lines between traditional and new – everything and everyone can be fashionable now, and nothing is off the table – are we really in a fashion utopia?

With their passion for experimentation and unwavering desire for authenticity, Gen-Z’s influence on fashion is something that generations to come will surely remember.
