Starting April 10, 2025, Bengaluru residents will experience an increase in water tariffs as the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) implements a price hike. BWSSB implements its first rate hike since 2014. The adjustment will see charges rise by 0.15 paise to ₹1.90 per liter, depending on usage categories.
BWSSB Chairman Ram Prasath Manohar stated that an official order detailing the revised rates will be issued on April 10. He highlighted Bengaluru's rapid growth in both population and geographic expansion over the past decade, which has contributed to the board's escalating operational costs.
Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar emphasized the necessity of this increase, stating,
Despite soaring expenses, water tariffs haven’t been revised since 2014. Meanwhile, the cost of other utilities has increased significantly. Electricity tariff hikes have also impacted our water-pumping operations, contributing to BWSSB’s annual losses of nearly ₹1,000 crore.
The revised tariffs are structured as follows:
- Domestic Use: ₹10 to ₹57 per 1,000 liters
- Apartment Bulk Supply: ₹35 to ₹55 per 1,000 liters
- Non-Domestic Use: ₹60 to ₹100 per 1,000 liters
- Industrial Use: ₹100 per 1,000 liters
- Sewerage Charges: Increased to 50% of the water rate
This adjustment aims to address BWSSB's financial shortfall and support the maintenance of Bengaluru's water infrastructure. While the increase may pose a burden on consumers, officials assert that it is crucial for ensuring an uninterrupted water supply and maintaining system upkeep.
When I was having a conversation with my friends in Bengaluru, they shed light on the challenges posed by the impending water tariff hike. While it's clear that updating the tariffs is necessary to maintain the city's water supply system, the extra cost is a genuine concern for many households. This situation highlights how important it is for all of us to use water wisely. It also shows the need for clear communication from the authorities so that everyone understands the reasons behind such decisions and can prepare accordingly.
