Delhi AQI Hits 450 in Wazirpur as GRAP-III Kicks In
Wazirpur records 450 AQI with several areas in the 'Severe' category; GRAP-III activated across NCR as Delhi fights thick smog.
Delhi woke up to dense smog on Saturday as air quality in major areas was recorded past 400, falling under the 'Severe' category. The overall Air Quality Index (AQI) in the city at 10 am stood at 389, while the Commission for Air Quality Management has already implemented Stage III of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) across the National Capital Region. Wazirpur logged the highest figure, 450, putting it in the severe category, with Bawana at 443 and Rohini at 426. Anand Vihar, Mundka and Jahangirpuri also recorded AQIs above 420, signaling a broad, dangerous level of pollution across several neighborhoods.
Alongside Wazirpur, Rohini, Anand Vihar, Mundka and Jahangirpuri were among the worst-affected pockets, with values ranging from 419 to 426 in multiple areas. The national capital’s air quality has deteriorated due to a combination of stagnant winds and low temperatures, which hinder pollutant dispersion. The GRAP Stage III actions are in effect to curb emissions and mitigate health risks as the city grapples with hazardous conditions.
The pollution spike comes as Delhi-NCR authorities push broader measures. Earlier this week, the Directorate of Education directed schools in the NCR to shift to hybrid learning for students up to class 5. In the broader policy arena, the Supreme Court directed Punjab and Haryana to file a status report on steps to curb stubble burning, a notable contributor to the region’s air crisis. Findings from the Decision Support System showed stubble burning contributing 8.5% to Delhi’s pollution on Friday, while transport emissions accounted for 19.8%, the highest share among sources. In the meantime, anti-smog measures, including water spraying from anti-smog guns, are in place to dampen the immediate impact of the smog. Winds remain slow, and cooler temperatures are expected to prolong poor air quality conditions, prompting residents to limit outdoor activities and take precautions.
