Trump criticized Canada for "disinviting" the United States, linking it directly to the "substantial TARIFFS" Canada is now paying to the US. He also attacked the original agreement for the bridge project, which began during his presidency in 2018, calling it "terribly negotiated" and asserting that under his influence, the US now claims "50 percent of the Profit."

Canadian officials held their ceremony on Friday, celebrating the completion of the cable-stayed bridge, which was entirely financed by Canada. The bridge is set to open to traffic this Monday. A joint ceremony involving both nations had initially been planned, symbolizing cooperation and shared progress. However, these plans were scrapped after Trump announced a 50 percent tariff on a range of Canadian goods earlier this week. He justified these tariffs by alleging discrimination against American autos and other products.

A spokesperson for Canada’s Infrastructure Minister Gregor Robertson explained the decision, stating that "In light of trade action threatened by the United States earlier this week, it would be inappropriate to proceed with a celebratory event between the two countries." This isn't the first time the bridge's opening has been mired in controversy. Earlier in the year, Trump had threatened to block its inauguration, citing Canadian restrictions on US alcohol sales and other ongoing disputes. An agreement was eventually reached in July, with Trump claiming he had secured a "much better deal." Reports indicate the US is indeed set to collect half of the profits from the bridge.
