UK Protesters Mistake Pakistan Cricket Team for Migrants! 🏏🇬🇧

Anti-immigration demonstrators in southern England recently caused a stir when they mistakenly gathered outside a hotel, believing it housed asylum seekers. The group, however, had unknowingly targeted the accommodation of Pakistan's Under-19 cricket team.

The incident unfolded on Tuesday evening, September 8, 2026, in Cosham, a northern suburb of Portsmouth.

This event occurred just two days after protesters had disrupted the disembarkation of migrants near the port city, leading to confrontations with police in widely condemned scenes.

Immigration, particularly the arrival of tens of thousands of asylum seekers annually via small boats from mainland Europe, has become a highly sensitive political issue in Britain, fueling numerous protests, some of which have turned violent.

Reports circulating online about a coach carrying young Asian men arriving at a Marriott Hotel in Cosham prompted the gathering of protesters. A local councillor from the anti-immigration party Reform UK quickly responded to the scene. Upon confirming that the men were, in fact, members of Pakistan's teenage cricket squad, the councillor played a crucial role in helping to disperse the crowd, clearing up the significant misunderstanding.

A spokesman for Hampshire Police confirmed that they were alerted to a group of people congregating near the hotel that evening. Officers attended and engaged with members of the public who were expressing concerns about the coach seen in the area. The police spokesman stated that officers "explained that their concerns were not correct," though they did not explicitly confirm the Pakistani cricketers were the mistaken target.

The crowd, estimated at around 30 individuals, subsequently dispersed.

This unfortunate mix-up highlights the heightened tensions surrounding immigration in the UK.

Meanwhile, the senior Pakistan men's cricket team is currently engaged in the third Test match against England at Birmingham's Edgbaston ground. Following this incident, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) is reportedly reviewing security measures for the visiting Pakistan team.
