Chennai and several districts across Tamil Nadu are on the cusp of a significant weather change, with the Southwest Monsoon set to strengthen and bring much-needed rainfall from June 21. This shift is expected to offer considerable relief from the prevailing warm and humid conditions that have gripped the state.
According to the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in Chennai, weather systems, including an upper-air circulation and a trough, are actively influencing southern India. These conditions are creating an ideal scenario for enhanced rainfall activity, marking a promising turn after what has been a patchy monsoon season across parts of the country.
The RMC has forecasted heavy rain in isolated places across more than ten districts, particularly those nestled along the Western Ghats. Districts such as the Nilgiris, Erode, Salem, Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri, Coimbatore, Theni, Dindigul, and Kanyakumari, along with the ghat areas of Tirunelveli, are likely to experience substantial downpours.
For Chennai and its suburbs, light to moderate showers accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning are anticipated. This weather activity is expected to significantly reduce maximum temperatures by 4-5 degrees Celsius in various districts, bringing a welcome respite to residents.
The strengthening of the monsoon over Tamil Nadu is particularly noteworthy as India has experienced rainfall deficits in June in several regions, sparking concerns among farmers and water managers. However, current meteorological forecasts indicate a gathering momentum of monsoon activity in southern and western parts of the country, with new systems expected to improve rainfall distribution in the days ahead.
Tamil Nadu has already witnessed isolated pockets of intense rainfall, with Kalasapakkam in Tiruvannamalai district recording the highest at 9 cm during a 24-hour period ending Saturday morning.
