Romero Joins Atlético Madrid in £34.2M Deal! ⚽️ Spurs Captain Departs
Spurs captain Cristian Romero completes his move to Atlético Madrid for £34.2 million! Discover the details of his five-year contract and emotional farewell.
Atletico Madrid has officially confirmed the signing of Tottenham Hotspur captain Cristian Romero, securing the 28-year-old defender on a contract until June 2031. While the Spanish club did not disclose the financial terms, British media reports indicate a transfer fee of approximately £34.2 million ($46.27 million).
Romero's departure marks the end of a five-season tenure with the North London club. He made 156 appearances and scored 13 goals across all competitions for Spurs, having initially joined on loan from Atalanta in 2021 before making the move permanent. The Argentine international, a key figure in his national team's 2022 World Cup triumph and a participant in the 2026 tournament final, leaves a significant void in Tottenham's defense.
The centre-back bid an emotional farewell to Spurs on Friday, expressing that he was leaving "with a heart full of memories and enormous pride for everything we lived and achieved together." His time at the club, however, was not without controversy; Romero drew criticism last season for travelling to Argentina before the club's final league match against Everton, at a time when Spurs were still battling to secure their Premier League status.
