Holi 2026: NSE, BSE closed; MCX first session shut, markets cautious
NSE and BSE stay closed for Holi 2026, with NCDEX shut and MCX halting the first session; markets slip as investors factor in the holiday break and global cues.
NSE and BSE will remain closed today on account of Holi; NCDEX will also be shut in both trading sessions, while MCX is shut for the first session but will resume trading in the evening session from 5 pm to 11:30 pm.
In a volatile session, Nifty ended down 313 points, or 1.24%, at 24,865.70, while the Sensex plunged 1,048 points, or 1.29%, to 80,238.85. The fear gauge, India VIX, shot up 25% to 17.13.
Ajit Mishra, Senior Vice President - Research at Religare Broking, said the sharp decline has pushed the Nifty closer to its swing low around 24,600. He noted that a decisive break below this level could extend the correction toward 24,400; on the upside, the 25,000–25,250 zone is likely to act as an immediate hurdle in case of any recovery. He advised maintaining a cautious stance and keeping position sizes light with disciplined risk management.
The holiday calendar for 2026 had an initial plan of 15 trading holidays; an additional holiday on January 15 was later added in response to the Mumbai BMC elections.
