Ex-AIADMK Minister S. Semmalai Jumps to TVK, Reshaping Tamil Nadu Politics!
Big political shake-up in Tamil Nadu! Former AIADMK minister S. Semmalai defects to ruling TVK, boosting CM Vijay ahead of crucial bypolls. Get the full story!
Veteran politician S. Semmalai, a former minister and long-standing figure in the AIADMK, has officially defected to the ruling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK). His high-profile move, accompanied by a host of supporters, unfolded at a rally led by TVK chief and Chief Minister C.
Joseph Vijay in Dharapuram on Wednesday.
This significant political shift comes just as Tamil Nadu gears up for crucial by-elections.
Semmalai's entry into the TVK is a major boost for the party, particularly as it campaigns for its bypoll candidate, P. Sathyabama, who herself is an ex-AIADMK leader.
The by-election in Dharapuram (SC) and Madurantakam (SC) constituencies, necessitated by the resignations of former AIADMK legislators P.
Sathyabama and Maragatham Kumaravel, is slated for October 6.
These elections are seen as a critical test of the current political climate in the state.
Hailing from Salem district, historically an AIADMK stronghold, Semmalai served as a minister in the cabinet of the late J. Jayalalithaa after the 2001 elections. His political career includes an independent victory in the 1984 Taramangalam assembly, followed by his joining the AIADMK later that year.
However, he faced setbacks within the AIADMK in recent years, notably being denied a ticket in the 2026 assembly polls.
Explaining his departure, Semmalai stated that opportunities to contest polls were denied to him after the demise of former chief minister J. Jayalalithaa.
He cited the growing rifts within the AIADMK, saying his conscience no longer allowed him to remain with the party.
This "very difficult decision" to resign from the AIADMK underscores the ongoing fragmentation within the state's traditional opposition.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay is actively positioning TVK as the organic successor to AIADMK, particularly under the leadership of late Chief Ministers Jayalalithaa and M.G. Ramachandran, whom he lauded for their ability to handle arch-rival DMK.
This narrative aims to consolidate support and justify the party switchovers of candidates like Sathyabama.
Amidst these developments, there's also speculation surrounding potential changes to the ruling alliance.
Minister Rajmohan has stated that any decisions regarding alliance shifts, including rumors about the Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) joining the front, would be made by Chief Minister Vijay after democratic discussions with existing alliance partners.
This indicates that while the TVK is strengthening its internal ranks, it's also carefully navigating its broader political partnerships.
The upcoming bypolls and these significant party defections paint a dynamic picture of Tamil Nadu's political landscape, with CM Vijay and the TVK actively reshaping the state's future.
