Sensex Dips 313 Points Ahead of Economic Survey 2025-26
Markets slip as investors brace for the Economic Survey 2025-26, with Maruti and Asian Paints leading losses and the Nifty weakening below 25,250.
Domestic equity benchmarks Sensex and Nifty opened lower on Thursday, after two sessions of gains, as mixed global cues weighed on sentiment ahead of the Economic Survey 2025–26 to be tabled by the Union Finance Minister.
At 9:17 am, the BSE Sensex slipped 220.81 points, or 0.27%, to 82,123.87 after falling nearly 313 points in early trade. The NSE Nifty was down 55.90 points, or 0.22%, to 25,286.85, after briefly touching a low of 25,248.55.
Among Sensex constituents, Maruti Suzuki India declined 2.55% to Rs 14,497, Asian Paints slipped 1.72%, while Titan, IndiGo and Hindustan Unilever fell 1.54%, 1.24% and 1.15%, respectively.
The broader market mood reflected cautious positioning amid global cues, with Japan’s Nikkei 225 down 0.16%, while South Korea’s Kospi rose 0.14% and Hong Kong’s Hang Seng edged up 0.27%.
Analysts cautioned that while the broader setup remains supportive, near-term upside could be capped by persistent FIIs outflows, pre-budget positioning and mixed regional signals.
Market participants are watching key levels closely, with 25200/82000 cited as a critical support zone. A move above 25500/82800 could lift the index toward 25575/83000, while a breach below these supports could weigh on sentiment.
With the Budget scheduled for February 1, investors will be keen on signals around capital expenditure, fiscal consolidation and policy direction for various sectors. Until then, volatility may persist as traders position themselves in advance of policy cues and global developments.
