The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Thursday distanced itself from controversial slogans raised by some of its workers during celebrations marking the seventh anniversary of Article 370’s abrogation in Kashmir. The party’s clarification comes after significant backlash on social media regarding the alleged "anti-women" content of the slogans.
During an event held on Wednesday in Anantnag, south Kashmir, BJP workers were seen altering a well-known slogan traditionally associated with the National Conference (NC) and Article 370. The original NC slogan, "Aze hund izat te Faze hund izat 370" (the honour of Azi and Fazi is Article 370), which refers to the dignity of women in the Valley, was reportedly modified by BJP workers to "Moklev Fazi hund te Azi hund izat" (the honour of Fazi and Azi has ended). This alteration starkly contrasts with the original emphasis on dignity and respect.
Images and videos of BJP workers dancing while chanting these altered slogans quickly circulated online, drawing sharp criticism from the public who deemed them derogatory to women. This public outcry compelled the BJP to issue an official statement.
Ashok Koul, BJP general secretary (organisation), asserted the party's core values, stating, "The party firmly believes in respecting the dignity of women and remains committed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of women empowerment." He further highlighted the BJP's efforts in empowering women, citing the historic decision to provide 33% reservation for women as a testament to their commitment.
Adding to the party's stance, BJP spokesperson Altaf Thakur clarified that while some individuals might have raised slogans based on "personal thinking or emotions," these slogans do not represent the BJP’s official position or the views of the rally leaders. Thakur emphasized that the party "does not endorse any defamatory or derogatory remarks against anyone."
