SC Orders ECI to Publish Tamil Nadu SIR Discrepancy Lists
Supreme Court directs publishing of 'logical discrepancy' lists in Tamil Nadu's SIR, with a 10-day window for objections.
In a significant move, the Supreme Court directed the Election Commission of India to publish the names of people in Tamil Nadu's 'logical discrepancy' lists as part of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR). The lists must be displayed at gram panchayat bhawan, taluka offices of every sub-division, and ward offices of urban areas in Tamil Nadu. People named in the 'logical discrepancy' lists can submit documents or objections in person or through a representative within 10 days. The district collector has been told to deploy adequate staff for a smooth SIR process, and the DGP and Police Commissioner are to ensure that law and order is maintained during the exercise. Earlier this month, the court issued similar directives for West Bengal's voter list, indicating a push for uniform guidelines across states. The bench underscored that once uniform guidelines are laid down for Bengal, there is no reason they cannot be applied to Tamil Nadu as well. The move signals a broader effort to bring transparency to voter revisions and provide eligible voters with a clear chance to contest discrepancies.
