Mondal had been evading authorities for nearly two weeks following allegations that he threatened workers during the recent West Bengal Assembly polls. He is the first sitting MLA from the party to be taken into custody since the change in the state administration.
The legal pressure on the party hierarchy continues to intensify. Investigators recently discovered significant amounts of cash hidden in suitcases buried in agricultural land belonging to Dipankar Bhattacharya, the Chairman of Baduria Municipality. This follows the arrest of former Minister Sujit Bose, who is allegedly linked to a municipal recruitment scam. With nearly a hundred arrests of party workers reported in recent weeks, the party is feeling significant pressure from law enforcement and central agencies.
Adding to the party's woes is a growing sense of internal dissent. Senior leader and four-term MP Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar has officially resigned from all her organizational roles. Her resignation came just a day after she attended a meeting with Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari. Dastidar cited moral responsibility for recent electoral setbacks and hinted at dissatisfaction with internal party management and the influence of external political consultancies.
The exodus is not limited to the top tier. Several councillors and local leaders, including Sushanta Ghosh and Arup Chakraborty from the Kolkata Municipal Corporation, have also stepped down from their posts. This mass movement of leaders appearing at meetings chaired by the ruling party suggests a significant shift in the state's political landscape. As the principal opposition party, the Trinamool Congress now faces the dual challenge of defending its members in court while trying to keep its leadership together.
