Pakistan police have successfully rescued a French woman, Sylvie Yasmina, 54, and her five children who were allegedly held captive and subjected to years of domestic abuse by her husband for more than a decade in the country’s northwest. The harrowing rescue took place earlier this week in Bara, a town located in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, near the Afghan border.
District police chief Waqar Ahmad confirmed that Ms. Yasmina’s husband, Ahmad Khan, has been arrested, and an investigation is currently underway. The rescue unfolded after one of Ms. Yasmina’s sons bravely managed to escape the house and alert the local police station about their plight.
According to initial statements made to investigators, Ms. Yasmina alleged that her husband subjected her to continuous physical and psychological abuse, describing him as having an "extremely violent temperament." Police reported finding Ms. Yasmina and her children in a dilapidated room, with Ms. Yasmina showing visible signs of injuries on her face. She further told authorities that she had been unable to live freely since moving to Pakistan in 2014, and her children were never allowed to attend school.
Following their rescue, Ms. Yasmina and her children were safely transferred to a women’s police station for protection. Police chief Ahmad noted that Ms. Yasmina has expressed a strong desire to return to France. Authorities are now coordinating with relevant officials and the French embassy to facilitate her repatriation. The French embassy has not yet released an official comment on the matter.
This incident casts a harsh light on the persistent issue of domestic violence in Pakistan. Human rights organizations frequently highlight that hundreds of women annually report physical and psychological abuse by their husbands and other family members. However, a significant number of cases are believed to go unreported due to various societal pressures and fears. Furthermore, Pakistan tragically sees scores of women murdered each year, often for perceived violations of conservative norms regarding love, marriage, and public conduct.
