Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday laid the foundation stone for several infrastructure projects in Singur, inaugurating schemes worth over ₹830 crore that he said would accelerate development in West Bengal. The PM also announced an extended port gate system at Balagarh and an Inland Water Transport initiative, underscoring a push to upgrade the state’s connectivity and logistics.
In a rally following the ceremony, Modi framed the visit as part of the Centre’s commitment to Bengal’s growth, insisting that a double-engine government—led by the BJP—could ensure swifter benefits from central schemes. He contrasted this with what he described as delays under the state government, while outlining a vision for district-focused development that would spotlight local strengths.
Singur carries a storied political past. In 2006, Mamata Banerjee led farmer protests against the Left Front’s land acquisition for Tata Motors’ Nano project, making Singur a flashpoint in Bengal politics. Modi invoked that memory to frame a new era of development, pointing to the BJP’s “one district, one product” approach and citing Dhaniakhali saree, jute, and handloom industries as examples of targeted, area-specific growth.
The PM also highlighted a digital platform to register fishermen nationwide, criticizing perceived roadblocks to such schemes. He argued that district-by-district planning could tailor benefits and speed up job creation across Bengal, tying local industry to broader national schemes.
As election season approaches, Modi urged voters to back a development-focused government, pitching the choice as one between progress and stagnation. The events in Singur were presented as a microcosm of the BJP’s broader strategy to magnify central-project benefits at a regional level.
