After a brief cool spell on Monday, temperatures across the UK are set to soar once again, ushering in what is expected to be the fifth heatwave of the year for many regions. Starting Tuesday, Scotland and Northern Ireland will see temperatures in the low to mid-twenties, while England and Wales brace for highs in the mid to high twenties.
The heat is forecast to intensify dramatically, with temperatures in excess of 30°C expected widely across east Wales, central, eastern, and southern England. The peak of this heatwave is anticipated on Thursday, when some areas in south-east England could reach a scorching 35°C. If this occurs, it would mark the fourth consecutive month with temperatures of 35°C or more recorded.
The widespread nature of these rising temperatures means that the threshold for an official heatwave declaration is likely to be met across much of England and Wales. Compounding the concerns, no significant rainfall is predicted for the coming week, significantly increasing the likelihood that more areas of England will move into drought status.
In response to the escalating conditions, Yellow heat health alerts have been issued for most of England, remaining in effect until at least 9 PM BST on Tuesday. These alerts highlight potential impacts on health and social care services, and signal an increased risk to vulnerable individuals. Authorities are expected to update these warnings as the heatwave progresses.
