Ambition cruise: 1,000+ passengers stranded in Bordeaux over illness outbreak
More than 1,000 guests on the Ambition are held in Bordeaux as 49 passengers fall ill with a gastrointestinal illness; a death on board is under investigation.
More than 1,000 passengers are being held on the Ambition, a UK-operated cruise ship, in Bordeaux after 49 people fell ill with a gastrointestinal illness. Three passengers have been isolated in their cabins, and most others will not be able to disembark while health authorities monitor the situation. The illness comes as the ship, which set sail from Belfast on Friday, has faced a developing health scare during its voyage.
The operator said there were 1,187 guests and 514 crew members onboard. An update indicated that as of 11:00 BST on Wednesday, 48 passengers were displaying symptoms consistent with gastrointestinal illness, along with one crew member. The line noted that the outbreak appears not to be linked to a hantavirus incident on a separate cruise ship.
A 92-year-old man on board died on Sunday, though the cause of death is not yet established by a coroner. The cruise operator extended condolences to the deceased’s friends and family and said it would provide support as investigators determine the exact cause of death. The ship’s schedule and passenger arrangements have been affected as officials determine the next steps for disembarkation and health monitoring.
Inside the ship, measures have been taken to limit transmission. Guests reported that self-serve options were restricted: condiments were removed, utensils were wrapped and handed out, and critical facilities such as pools and the jacuzzi were closed pending further assessment. Officials and the operator stressed that gastrointestinal illness is common on ships and is usually caused by norovirus or food poisoning, underscoring the need for cautious hygiene and monitoring.
The incident has raised questions about onboard health protocols and how cruise lines manage illness outbreaks mid-journey. Passengers and families are awaiting further updates as investigators work to confirm the source of the illness and to decide when disembarkation can resume safely.
