New Delhi, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has unveiled a significant initiative aimed at integrating young Indians into the formal banking system. Speaking at the PSB Confluence 2026 in New Delhi, Sitharaman called upon public sector banks to roll out a dedicated month-long ‘Banking For Youth’ campaign, scheduled to commence on October 2, 2026. This forward-looking program targets citizens aged 16 and above, seeking to foster financial capability right from the outset of their financial journeys.
The Finance Minister emphasized the critical importance of early engagement, stating that bringing young individuals into formal banking structures early on can significantly shape their economic future. She highlighted that India’s burgeoning youth population is a powerful force, increasingly influencing consumption patterns, savings habits, investment decisions, entrepreneurial spirit, and overall wealth creation in the country. This campaign is a strategic step to harness that potential responsibly.
The proposed 'Banking For Youth' initiative is envisioned as a collaborative effort, to be coordinated through the Department of Financial Services and the Indian Banks’ Association. Its outreach strategy will focus on key educational and skill-building institutions, including colleges and universities, ensuring maximum penetration among the target demographic. To further facilitate young customers' access and understanding, Sitharaman also suggested the establishment of specialized ‘Yuva kiosks’ and the deployment of ‘Yuva Banking Mitra’ facilities at bank branches. These dedicated resources will provide guidance and support, helping young individuals navigate their financial needs with ease and confidence. The ultimate goal is to demystify banking and make it more accessible and appealing to the younger generation, countering the perception that public sector banks might not be "cool" enough for today's youth.
