A mass stabbing on a train traveling from Doncaster to London left 11 people injured, one of them critically, as investigators moved quickly to identify a motive and secure the scene. A 32-year-old Black British national was arrested in connection with the attack, and police say he remains in custody while inquiries continue.
The incident began around 6:25 pm local time after the passengers' ordeal intensified as the train passed through Peterborough in Cambridgeshire. Staff and passengers activated emergency alarms, and the train driver diverted the service to a safer, slower track. Emergency responders then reached the scene at Huntingdon station, about 15 minutes later, where armed officers detained two men and recovered a knife.
The driver, identified as Andrew Johnson, is noted for his calm and decisive actions. A former Royal Navy chief petty officer who served 17 years before becoming a train driver, Johnson helped coordinate the diversion of the train to minimize further harm. His quick communication with the control room was praised by authorities for preventing what could have been a worse outcome.
Counter-terror police have joined the investigation as detectives work to understand the motive behind the attack. While authorities have not yet released a clear motive, the scale of injuries and the early involvement of counter-terror investigators have kept the case under intense scrutiny. Eleven people were treated in hospital, with one staff member reported to be in critical condition.
As investigators review passenger testimony and security footage, officials urged the public to await official briefings for updates. The incident has prompted renewed questions about safety on public transportation and the effectiveness of emergency response protocols in high-traffic routes.
