China's FM Wang Yi: US & China Must Tackle Hurdles Before Summit

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi has urged both the United States and China to actively work on overcoming existing obstacles and managing their differences. This call comes ahead of an anticipated summit next month between U.S.

President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping, aiming to stabilize the often-turbulent relationship between the two global powers.

During a meeting with U.S. Ambassador to China David Perdue on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, Wang Yi emphasized the importance of focusing on a positive agenda. He stressed the need for both nations to "properly manage differences, remove interference and overcome obstacles to high-level exchanges," according to Chinese state broadcaster CCTV, which reported on Thursday, August 27.

Despite ongoing efforts to maintain stability, Wang Yi acknowledged that China-U.S. relations "still face various risks and challenges." The two leaders, Mr. Trump and Mr. Xi, previously met in Beijing in May, where they pledged to uphold a stable relationship and maintain a fragile trade truce.

While Mr. Trump extended an invitation to Mr. Xi for a September 24 meeting in the U.S., the exact date of the Chinese leader's visit remains unconfirmed.

In the interim, both countries have continued to engage in targeted economic actions against each other.

The U.S. recently banned Chinese-made robots, while China has responded by banning American entities from engaging in certain trade and activities within its borders.
