While it's still awaiting approval from the medicines regulator before becoming available on the NHS, early indications suggest it works just as effectively as the current daily insulin jabs, but with significantly less frequent administration.

He also highlighted the importance of ensuring this treatment helps reduce inequities in diabetes care.
With approximately 4.7 million people in the UK living with diabetes in 2024-25, and about 90% of them having type 2 diabetes (where the body doesn't produce enough insulin or uses it ineffectively), this weekly jab represents a major leap forward. Around one in four people with type 2 diabetes currently relies on insulin, making this development a beacon of hope for many.
