Delhi rolls out 100 Atal Canteens delivering meals at ₹5 per plate for low-income residents, backed by a ₹100 crore budget.
Delhi government on Thursday launched 100 Atal Canteens across the capital to provide meals at a subsidised rate of ₹5 per plate to the poor and low-income residents. The rollout coincides with the birth centenary of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.
In a first phase, 45 canteens were inaugurated today, with 55 more expected to open soon. The move, tied to the BJP's Delhi election manifesto, is supported by ₹100 crore in the 2025-26 budget. Some sites faced construction delays due to GRAP restrictions, but meals will be served despite the delays.
Each plate includes dal-chawal, vegetables, and roti, with around 500 meals planned to be served in the morning and evening. The canteens boast LPG stoves, industrial RO water facilities, and cold storage, and are monitored in real time via a digital platform and CCTV cameras.
To streamline distribution, a digital token system is being used to allocate meals. An inter-departmental committee is overseeing site approval, menu, distribution, and management.
