Shillong MP Ricky Syngkon collapses during futsal, dies
Shillong MP Ricky AJ Syngkon dies after collapsing during a futsal game in Shillong; the 54-year-old leader was known for his outreach across the Khasi-Jaintia Hills.
Shillong, Meghalaya – Lok Sabha MP Ricky AJ Syngkon collapsed while playing futsal with friends in Shillong on Thursday, and he died later in hospital. The 54-year-old MP for Shillong constituency, a member of the Voice of the People Party, was widely known for his active public engagement across the Khasi-Jaintia Hills.
Authorities said Syngkon collapsed around 6:30 pm at a local futsal facility and was rushed to Dr H Gordon Roberts Hospital, where he was declared dead at 8:42 pm.
Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma expressed grief, calling him a committed public representative. In the 2024 elections, Syngkon won the Shillong seat by about 3.7 lakh votes over his nearest rival, Congress MP Vincent H Pala, a margin that reflected his appeal in the region.
Colleagues and supporters described his work beyond party lines, noting his public outreach across the Khasi-Jaintia Hills and his willingness to engage with constituents on a range of issues, from development projects to social welfare.
His passing leaves Meghalaya's political circles in mourning as politicians and constituents paid their respects, reflecting on his public service and the sudden loss to Shillong's political community.
