Priyanka Gandhi slams Assam CM for targeting Gogoi family over Pakistan links
Priyanka Gandhi Vadra alleges political targeting of Gaurav Gogoi's family over alleged Pakistan links, calling it wrong politics during her Assam visit.
Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Friday said that targeting the family and children of the party's state unit president, Gaurav Gogoi, over his alleged Pakistan link by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma was "wrong politics". Vadra, who is the Congress screening committee chairperson for the coming Assembly polls in Assam, was on a two-day visit to the state. Gogoi, a Lok Sabha MP and son of former Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, has denied any links with the Pakistani establishment but admitted he had visited Pakistan in 2013 with his wife, who is British and was at that time based in the Delhi office of a climate action group. The Chief Minister had cited details from a special investigation team (SIT) probe into Gogoi's alleged links with Pakistan and named the MP's wife and the couple's two minor children, citing their passport details and religious affiliations. Vadra argued that Gogoi is being targeted not for his actions but because the CM fears him, describing the approach as a form of polarisation. She contrasted two types of leaders in politics: one who pursues development with a positive mindset to protect the state's culture and identity, and another who engages in polarisation and targets others and their families. Vadra urged that no one's family or children should be subjected to false accusations, emphasizing that people of Assam recognize this and that such conduct should stop. In her remarks in Guwahati, she underscored that the Congress does not endorse personal attacks and called for a focus on policy and governance as the assembly polls approach.
