Zaldy Transforms NYFW with Pirate Themed Menswear & Star Power!

Zaldy, the acclaimed designer behind some of RuPaul's most iconic drag looks and a favorite for pop stars like Britney and Lady Gaga, made a splash at New York Fashion Week with his Spring 2027 menswear line. This marked his second time showcasing menswear, but his extensive experience clearly shone through. For this collection, Zaldy leaned heavily into theatricality, transforming the lobby of the Chelsea Hotel into a pirate ship deck.

Models literally "walked the plank," showcasing looks that embraced a loose pirate theme without resorting to clichés like eye patches or fake parrots. Zaldy explained his vision:

I was thinking of this idea of pillaging and plundering - having different cultures come together for the first time.

This philosophy allowed him the freedom to creatively blend fabrications, textures, and colors.

The collection itself was a fascinating exploration of unexpected fusions. One standout was a boxy, tweed-like jacket with croc-embossed panels, paired with a silky white top featuring long neckties, a look that wouldn't be out of place in a "Pirates of the Caribbean" film.

He also presented a black, sheer deep-V top made from a daring mix of sports mesh and chiffon, described as "a little bro, yet a little gay too - just the right combo." Zaldy also "pirated" his own fashion history, reinterpreting past works. A black and white cotton-eyelet pair of shorts, for instance, paid homage to an early childhood design where he created a checkerboard jacket from tape at age 12.

His mastery of fabric manipulation was evident, even in pieces that intentionally looked raw or scratchy. Beyond the avant-garde, Zaldy demonstrated his capacity for traditional glamour, as seen in a pink and green brocade evening suit paired with a mossy silk top. This piece served as a powerful reminder that while his concepts can be wildly imaginative, the execution and craftsmanship remain impeccable.

A Zaldy show wouldn't be complete without a touch of sensuality. Memorable "sizzling" designs included a statement patchwork jacket cropped to reveal the abs, which was more than just a "thirst trap." This piece referenced his own Filipino culture, drawing inspiration from traditional buttoned jackets and incorporating a delightful mishmash of fabrics, from made-in-Africa textiles to vintage ribbons from the 1940s.

"I wanted to pirate my own culture," he shared.

Unexpectedly this season, the show also featured a greater presence of women's looks. Zaldy, having a strong background in womenswear, saw this as an opportune moment to reintroduce it as his menswear gains prominence.

He delved into his archives, reviving pieces like a pink and green diagonal-striped slip dress originally worn by Karen Elson in his 2005 show. While focusing on menswear might be strategically wiser given the gap in the New York market for whimsical designs, Zaldy admitted he simply wanted "fun clothes for the summer time" and allowed himself to be fearless with this collection.
