OpenAI Cuts Off Elon Musk's Cursor, Escalating Tech Titan Feud!

The long-standing and often acrimonious feud between OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and tech mogul Elon Musk has taken another dramatic turn. On Friday, OpenAI announced its decision to cease providing its advanced AI models to Cursor, a coding tool company recently acquired by Musk's SpaceX, citing concerns over contract compliance.

OpenAI stated in a blog post that it

cannot be confident that SpaceX will use our technology within our terms of service, based on our experience with Elon Musk's companies violating contracts.

This move follows a previous breach of contract with X (formerly Twitter), which is also part of SpaceX, after Musk acquired the social media platform. Elon Musk, never one to shy away from controversy, responded on Saturday in an X post, declaring, “I couldn't care less.” He further accused Altman and OpenAI President Greg Brockman of being “untrustworthy” and reiterated his long-held assertion that they “stole an open source nonprofit”, a claim central to his $150 billion lawsuit against OpenAI earlier this year, which was ultimately ruled against him.

The decision by OpenAI highlights the deep mistrust that has festered between the two tech giants. Musk, the world's wealthiest individual, has consistently argued that OpenAI deviated from its original nonprofit mission for personal gain. OpenAI, conversely, has maintained that Musk sought undue control over the company.

Despite the escalating tensions, Michael Truell, a co-founder of Cursor and now an executive at SpaceX, indicated on X that the company is actively engaging with the OpenAI team to resolve the issue.

In a significant development for Cursor, Anthropic, a prominent rival to both OpenAI and Musk's ventures, quickly stepped in.

Tom Brown, one of Anthropic's co-founders, announced plans to increase computing resources to support Claude models within Cursor, offering a potential lifeline to the coding platform amidst the dispute.
