Modi chairs high-level energy review amid West Asia tensions
PM Modi leads a Cabinet Security meet to safeguard supplies, diversify import sources, and boost power readiness as Middle East tensions threaten energy routes.
As tensions in West Asia threaten energy and commodity supply routes, Prime Minister Modi chaired a Cabinet Committee on Security meeting to review the situation and map mitigating steps. The discussion assessed short, medium, and long-term impacts on the global economy and on India, with a focus on concrete counter-measures and a whole-of-government approach. A Group of Ministers and a group of secretaries were directed to work with sectoral groups and stakeholders to push these plans forward.
The cabinet panel considered diversifying sources for major imports—fertilisers, chemicals, pharmaceuticals, and petrochemicals—with particular emphasis on fertilisers ahead of the upcoming kharif season. The backdrop includes disruptions to natural gas imports following missile attacks in the region that affected energy infrastructure in Qatar, a key LNG supplier. The measures aim to ensure adequate fertiliser stocks and continued supply for farmers and industry alike.
In addition, the CCS stressed the importance of maintaining sufficient coal stocks at power plants to safeguard electricity supply. The overarching objective is an uninterrupted supply chain, stable logistics, and efficient distribution across the country, even as geopolitical risks linger.
There is also an emphasis on potential support through allied channels to safeguard maritime routes, including through the Hormuz Strait, with partners ready to assist in ensuring safe passage. The government articulated both immediate actions and longer-term reforms that require cross-ministerial coordination and ongoing consultation with stakeholders to bolster energy security and resilience.
