A Greek air force jet tragically crashed during an aerial display north of Athens on Saturday, sending large plumes of black smoke into the sky and triggering a massive fire. Thousands of spectators attending the annual Athens Flying Week event looked on as the twin-seat Phantom F4 jet went down.
The incident occurred while the fighter jet was performing a low-altitude manoeuvre.
While there were no immediate reports of injuries among the audience, the condition of the two crew members aboard the F4 Phantom remains unknown. Emergency responders faced challenges in reaching the crash site due to the intensity of the fire at the Tanagra air force base, located approximately 60 kilometres (40 miles) north of Athens.
A significant emergency response was launched, with 85 firefighters, assisted by 11 water-dropping planes and helicopters, deployed to tackle the inferno. Their efforts focused on containing the blaze and ensuring it remained at a safe distance from the public attending the popular aerial show.
