A landmark ceremony in Petropolis installs Latin America's first Lord Ganesha idol, with Pran Patishtha rites, prayers, and traditional Vedic rituals led by India's ambassador and a Brazilian Vedanta teacher.
On this occasion, a first-ever Lord Ganesha idol in Latin America was given the Pran Patishtha during a ceremony attended by devotees and community members.
Indian ambassador to Brazil Dinesh Bhatia, along with Brazilian teacher Jonas Masetti, were present at the event held at Centro Cultural Vishva Vidya in Petropolis. The event was a major and impactful event for the expanding Hindu minority in the area. It contained rituals, prayers, and proper Vedic traditions that would be employed to formally install the deity in the place.

In South America, there are about 300,000 to 400,000 Hindus. The majority of people live in Guyana and Suriname, as a big minority, and small minorities in Brazil and elsewhere. The idol was placed at Instituto Vishva Vidya, based in Petropolis, Rio de Janeiro, founded by Jonas Masetti. Also known as Vishvanatha, he is a Brazilian teacher of Advaita Vedanta, Sanskrit, and yoga, and is a direct disciple of Swami Dayananda Saraswati. He received the fourth-highest civilian honour, Padma Shri, for his outstanding service to the promotion of Vedic culture, Vedanta, and Sanskrit in May 2025.

The event went on and on, and videos and visuals of the event got the attention of social media. While some welcomed and appreciated the event, others criticised the placement of a Hindu and Indian god in America.
Now, after being consecrated in Brazil in an authentic Vedic ritual, devotees hope that this is a new chapter in Hindu traditions in Latin America. The ceremony was a symbol of faith and devotion, as well as the growing influence of Indian spiritualism in the world.
