A Reddit tip helped authorities identify Claudio Manuel Neves Valente as the suspect in Brown University's Barus & Holley engineering and physics building attack and the murder of MIT professor Nuno Loureiro. The suspect acted alone and was found dead after a days-long manhunt.
The pursuit stretched across Rhode Island, Massachusetts, and New Hampshire. Valente, a Portuguese national and former Brown graduate student, entered the U.S. on a student visa and later became a lawful permanent resident. Investigators say the two killings may be connected, with a rental car seen at both locations and security footage linking him to the MIT professor's residence. Valente was later found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound in a rented storage unit in Salem, New Hampshire.
The Brown attack killed two students and wounded several others inside the Barus & Holley building, a site with older sections that lacked full surveillance. The FBI has offered a reward for information; the motive remains unknown, and authorities say the suspect used concealment tactics to evade capture.
Authorities are examining possible links between the Massachusetts murder and the Rhode Island shootings as the investigation continues.
