Fans worldwide know Sean Astin as the loyal Samwise Gamgee from "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy, a film series that raked in billions at the global box office. However, Astin recently revealed a surprising truth: his salary for the iconic role was so meager that he was forced to sell his house.
In a candid interview with The Guardian, Astin, who also rose to fame as a child star in "The Goonies," explained the significant "disconnect" between the massive success and attention the fantasy franchise received and the actual compensation for its actors. "It was not a lot of money! In fact, I had to sell my house because I negotiated such a small amount on the trilogy," the 55-year-old actor stated.
Astin elaborated that while the role granted him immense visibility and access within the industry, the financial remuneration left much to be desired. He had previously disclosed in 2017 that he was paid $250,000 for his work across all three films and received no residuals, even as the Peter Jackson-directed blockbusters, made on a budget of around $281 million, went on to gross $2.9 billion worldwide.
This issue of seemingly disproportionate earnings for the cast in comparison to the films' astronomical success isn't new. Other cast members have also touched upon it over the years. Cate Blanchett, who portrayed Galadriel, famously quipped that "no one got paid anything to do that movie," jokingly adding that she "basically got free sandwiches, and I got to keep my ears as pay." Even Elijah Wood, who played Frodo Baggins, has commented on the situation. Astin's recent revelation brings this long-standing discussion about Hollywood's financial structures and fair compensation back into the spotlight.
