Jaishankar to Visit Canada for G7 Meet, Signaling a Thaw in Ties
India's external affairs minister heads to Ontario for the G7 foreign ministers' gathering, aiming to bolster Canada ties and highlight Global South voices.
India's External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar will travel to Canada on November 12 to participate in the G7 foreign ministers' meeting in Ontario. He will join the outreach session for G7 partners in Ontario at the invitation of Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand.
The visit marks the ongoing normalisation of bilateral ties after a diplomatic row tied to the killing of Khalistani activist Nijjar, with both countries having appointed new high commissioners as part of the reset. Jaishankar is also expected to hold bilateral meetings with Anand on the sidelines of the G7 gathering.
The G7 meeting is set to address pressing global economic and security challenges, with Canada hosting and inviting outreach partners including India. The discussions are expected to emphasise the need to bolster the ‘voice of the Global South in international fora’ and explore avenues to resume trade and investment.
This outreach comes as part of a broader push to elevate India’s role in international diplomacy and strengthen ties with long-standing partners amid evolving global tensions.
