A tragic incident unfolded on Ram Mandir Road in Bengaluru's Rajajinagar area on Wednesday evening, leaving a 52-year-old motorcyclist in critical condition. Satish, who was on his way for finance collection work, suffered severe head injuries when a dry branch from a roadside tree suddenly broke off and fell directly onto his head. Compounding the gravity of the situation, CCTV footage confirmed that Satish was riding without a helmet at the time of the accident.
The impact caused Satish to lose control of his motorcycle and crash onto the road. Local residents quickly rushed to his aid, transporting him to a nearby hospital. He was subsequently moved to a private hospital in Yeshwantpur, where doctors performed emergency brain surgery. His family has been informed that the next 48 hours are crucial, and Satish currently remains in a coma, fighting for his life.
When questioned about the incident, a senior official from the West City Corporation’s GBA branch described it as a “sporadic incident.” While acknowledging the tragedy, the official stated that the team was extending all possible support and trying to understand what went wrong. The official noted that the area is known for its many old trees and mentioned that sometimes, pruning on one side can cause an imbalance, leading a tree to lean or branches to become unstable. They also pointed out that dead branches, though dangerous, don't always appear to be dead. Night-time pruning, done due to overwhelming complaints, can also lead to improper cuts due to low visibility, creating further imbalance.
This incident unfortunately echoes a similar tragedy that occurred last June in Hanumanthnagar, where a 29-year-old HR executive slipped into a coma and later succumbed to his injuries after a tree branch fell on his scooter. That previous event led to government action, with Forest Cell officials being booked for negligence and the District Conservator of Forests being transferred. The recurring nature of such accidents raises serious questions about tree maintenance protocols and public safety measures within Bengaluru.
