Tragedy Strikes DR Resort: Tourist Dies, 1,700 Evacuated in Massive Blaze

A luxury resort in the Dominican Republic became the scene of a devastating fire on Friday, resulting in the death of one tourist and the evacuation of nearly 1,700 guests. The tragic incident occurred at the Viva Wyndham Dominicus Beach resort in Bayahibe, a popular town known for its picturesque Caribbean coastline.

The blaze claimed the life of a 46-year-old Italian woman, emergency services confirmed. In addition to the fatality, three individuals required medical attention at local facilities, while another six received treatment on-site for minor injuries. The early morning inferno spread rapidly, engulfing buildings and sending thick plumes of black smoke into the sky, as captured in widespread drone footage.

While the exact cause of the fire remains under investigation, an initial assessment suggests that strong wind conditions combined with the flammable thatched roofs of some resort structures contributed to its swift and destructive spread. The country's Emergency Operations Center (COE) confirmed that the fire has since been brought under control.

Following the extensive evacuation, all affected guests were safely relocated to alternative hotels in the area. Authorities have reassured the public that despite the resort incident, other tourist activities in Bayahibe and its surroundings remain unaffected. The Italian embassy has also stepped in, offering assistance to approximately 285 Italian tourists who were staying at the resort or nearby, providing emergency passports for those whose travel documents were lost and arranging return flights.

Wyndham Hotels & Resorts, which operates the resort under a franchise agreement, has been contacted for comment regarding the incident that has shaken the tranquil Caribbean destination.
