SEBI Revamps Stock Market Timings & Closing Auction for F&O! 📊
Major changes hit Indian stock markets from August 3! SEBI introduces a new Closing Auction Session for F&O stocks and extends trading hours. Get ready for fairer price discovery & less volatility! #StockMarket #SEBI
Starting August 3, the Indian stock market will see significant changes as the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) introduces a new Closing Auction Session (CAS) for F&O-eligible stocks and extends trading hours for the equity derivatives segment. These revisions aim to tackle the historically high end-of-day price volatility experienced in Indian equities, which global passive funds have highlighted as an issue compared to other markets. The overarching goal is to foster a fairer and more transparent closing price discovery process.
The most impactful change will be seen in how closing prices are determined for F&O-eligible (Category I) stocks. Instead of simply ending with the regular trading session, these stocks will now move into a dedicated auction process after 3:15 PM. This auction-discovered price will then become their official closing price. Regular trading for F&O-eligible stocks will conclude at 3:15 PM, followed by a brief five-minute transition period until 3:20 PM.
The Closing Auction Session itself will comprise two order entry windows: CAS Order Entry I from 3:20 PM to 3:25 PM, and CAS Order Entry II from 3:25 PM to 3:30 PM. Notably, during the second order entry window, market orders cannot be modified or cancelled. The session is designed to add an element of unpredictability by closing randomly within its final two minutes. Order matching will then occur between 3:30 PM and 3:35 PM, leading to the determination of the closing auction price. This new price will serve as the official closing price for all F&O-eligible stocks.
These changes do not apply universally to all stocks. Non-F&O equity cash stocks will continue to trade until 3:30 PM, with their existing market hours remaining unchanged. Furthermore, SEBI has extended trading in the equity derivatives (F&O) segment by an additional ten minutes. From August 3, trading in this segment will continue until 3:40 PM, while operating hours for other market segments will remain as they are.
Beyond the closing session, the regulator has also revised the pre-opening session. Under the new schedule, the order entry phase will now take place from 9:00 AM to 9:07 AM, with the order matching phase following from 9:07 AM to 9:15 AM. These comprehensive adjustments are expected to particularly benefit mutual funds through more efficient execution of their closing trades, and will have a significant impact on active traders and proprietary desks, ensuring a more level playing field and reducing the influence of last-minute large orders.
