50/50 Fallacy: Fake Financial Equality is Not Romantic
50/50 Fallacy: Fake Financial Equality is Not Romantic
Alright, guys, let's talk. You know that feeling when you're on a first date, everything's going great, and then the bill comes? And before you can even reach for your wallet, she's already got her phone out, PayTM open, ready to split it down to the last cent for that single olive she ate?
Yeah. That.
We've been told for years that 50/50 is equality. It's "modern." It's respectful. But honestly? I respect it. But what happens when you plan a vacation or something else that's more expensive than a dinner? Then she expects you to pay. Suddenly all that talk goes into the trash. I think in our pursuit of some fake financial fairness, we've accidentally sucked all the romance, all the fun, and frankly, all the point out of dating.
The Myth of "I Can Do It Myself"
Look, I get it. Women are strong, independent, and capable. You can absolutely pay for your own oat milk latte. Nobody is questioning that. But is every single interaction in a relationship a negotiation of who owes whom what? Because frankly, it's exhausting.
Remember when a guy wanted to do nice things? Like, pay for dinner, open the door, carry your inexplicably heavy purse that only contains lip gloss and existential dread? Now, if you offer to pay, half the time it's met with an eye-roll or a lecture about patriarchal norms. Dude, I just wanted to buy you a burrito. It's not a thesis statement on gender dynamics.
And don't even get me started on the "I insisted on paying half" flex on Instagram when you literally let your boyfriend buy you all your expensive Gucci belts and Coach bags. Great, you split a $30 bill. Where’s the actual equality? Where’s the feeling of authenticity? Because last time I checked, romance wasn't a branding activity.
The Silent Annoyances We Just Deal With (Because Equality)
Since we’re all about "equality" now, let’s talk about some other stuff that, for some reason, isn't getting the 50/50 treatment.
- The Temperature Debate: It's a universal truth: she's always cold, you're always hot. So why is it always myside of the bed that has to be a polar ice cap? And why does the temperature change when I'm not looking? If we're 50/50, shouldn't we take turns being comfortable? Just saying.
- The "We" in Chore Distribution: When we "deep clean" the apartment, it usually means I'm scrubbing the toilet while she's "supervising" from the couch, occasionally shouting instructions or asking if I've seen her charging cable. If my effort is 100%, where's the 50/50 there? I'd like to kindly request a quarterly "supervision day" for myself.
- The "Just Five More Minutes": This one gets me every time. We're supposed to be somewhere at 7 PM. I'm ready at 6:50 PM. She's "just finishing up." At 7:30 PM, she's still "just finishing up." But if I was 40 minutes late, there would be an entire documentary series about my disrespect. Where's the equality in time management?
Bringing the Magic Back (Without Turning Into a Caveman)
Look, I'm not saying we should go back to the 1950s. I don't want to live in a world where women can't have careers or their own opinions. But can we maybe find a middle ground where dating doesn't feel like a series of transactional exchanges?
Where a guy can pay for dinner without it being an act of patriarchal oppression? Where showing up on time isn't a gendered expectation? Where the thermostat can actually find a happy medium?
Maybe "equality" isn't just about splitting every small bill and blissfully ignoring any other emotional or logistical needs of your partner.
Because honestly, I'd rather buy you a fancy dinner than spend another hour trying to find my charging cable that somehow migrated to your purse. Just a thought.
