India repatriates 270 nationals from Thailand after fleeing a Myanmar cyber scam hub, with officials planning more flights and investigations into recruitment networks.
Two Indian Air Force flights ferried back 270 nationals, including 26 women, from Mae Sot, Thailand, to Hindon airbase in Uttar Pradesh, amid ongoing crackdowns on notorious cyber scam centres operating out of Myanmar. The repatriates, many of whom left Myawaddy after a military operation, are set to face questioning by investigative agencies once back home. The aim is to determine what activities they participated in and to identify any Indian linkages within the networks, while ensuring legal processes are followed before anyone can resume normal life.
On arrival, the returnees will be questioned by authorities to map out the scams’ recruitment chains and to discern roles played by different individuals. More flights are planned to bring back additional nationals, with the Indian embassies coordinating with Thai authorities to facilitate the process. The group includes both victims lured by promises of lucrative jobs and others alleged to have contributed to running the scams; investigators are keen to distinguish between the two to prevent future recruitment and to disrupt transnational networks.
