Tragedy at Notting Hill Carnival: Man Dies After Canal Incident

London was struck by tragedy during the Notting Hill Carnival as a man, believed to be in his 20s, died after entering a canal on Monday afternoon. The Metropolitan Police confirmed the incident, stating that officers had attempted to stop the man near Harrow Road as he approached the event. He fled on foot, leading to a pursuit.
The man then entered the water in the vicinity of Meanwhile Gardens, off Kensal Road. Both police officers and members of the public bravely entered the canal to rescue him, pulling him from the water. Officers immediately began CPR at the scene.
Paramedics were called and continued treatment before transporting the man to a central London hospital, where he was tragically pronounced dead at 16:43 BST. Commander Claire Smart, gold commander for the Notting Hill Festival, expressed her condolences, stating,
This is a tragic incident and our thoughts are with the loved ones of the man who has lost his life.
In line with standard procedure, any death following contact with the police is referred to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) for a full investigation into the circumstances. Commander Smart urged the public to avoid speculation while these investigations are underway. She also acknowledged the heroic efforts of those who entered the canal in an attempt to save the man, knowing they would be devastated by the outcome.
Despite this tragic event, the police described the two-day festival as having passed "largely without incident," although there were two non-life-threatening knife assaults.
On Monday evening, police reported 315 arrests, bringing the total number of arrests over the carnival weekend to 560.
